Using a taxi or a vehicle from a rideshare service such as Uber is a popular choice for many people – to get to work on time, make it to the airport for a flight, or head home after a night out. However, if you’re relying on one of these services, do you know if the vehicle you’re riding in is in good condition?
An ABC Action News report discusses the potential dangers posed by taxis and rideshare vehicles that are poorly maintained and in need of repairs and upgrades. In an investigation of more than 260 Uber vehicles and 1,600 taxis, they found that about 20% of the Uber vehicles and more than 25% of the taxis had a recall issue that hadn’t been fixed.
Neither Uber nor The Philadelphia’s Taxi Workers Alliance Association require drivers to fix recalls. Uber told Action News, it encourages checks for recalls and requires an active vehicle inspection. The Philadelphia Taxi Workers Alliance Association told Action News it’s the responsibility of the cab companies, who own most of the taxis, to voluntarily get safety recalls fixed.
According to the report, a variety of recall and safety issues were found and not fixed yet including steering column problems that can lead to a loss of steering control, faulty Takata airbags that may explode, and problematic rear door latches that may open while the vehicle is in motion.
As a result of vehicle issues, unsuspecting passengers may sustain deadly or otherwise serious injuries. The steep costs resulting from an accident can include medical bills, lost wages, and damaged personal property.
