Samuel Grossi & Sons, Inc., a steel fabrication facility, was the site of a fatal accident on Monday, January 16, 2017. Samuel Grossi & Sons, Inc. has provided structural steel for many high-profile projects including at the Philadelphia International Airport, Drexel University, Harrahs Casino, the Union Soccer Stadium and others. In fact, their website states, that for over 50 years, they are “the largest fabricator and erector of structural steel” in the Philadelphia area.
Accident Details
According to Bucks Local News, a large steel beam crushed a 57-year-old worker in Bensalem, PA just after noon. First responders were unable to help, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Bensalem Township Police Department issued a press release Monday evening which confirmed the fatality. Officials did not include preliminary information about how the accident happened.
Previous Fatality at Facility
Officials with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) automatically investigate all workplace fatalities in the United States. OSHA records reveal a history of safety violations and citations over the years. Another worker at the facility died when a beam fell on him in 2008. OSHA issued citations which included $2,775 in fines following that fatal event. The following year, additional serious workplace violations led to another $3,375 in OSHA fines. In 2011, another OSHA citation resulted in a $1,518 fine, and two years after that, the company faced another OSHA fine in the amount of $1,666.
